West Stonesdale runs from Tan Hill to Swaledale where the Stonesdale Beck joins the River Swale. The Pennine Way passes along one of the valley sides, which is normally boggy most of the year round. A road also runs through the valley along its floor, parallel to the Stonesdale Beck.
