Arkengarthdale sits just south of County Durham and runs into Swaledale near the village of Reeth. At the top of the Dale is the Tan Hill Inn, where it is very bleak. The dale is more picturesque towards its lower end, from Arkle and Langthwaite towards Reeth. Arkle Beck joins the River Swale near to Reeth. The village lies in a bowl surrounded by Marrick Moor, Reeth Low Moor, Fremmington Edge and Harkerside Moor.
